What Is Synchronicity & How to Attune to It

Whether it’s the first time you hear about Synchronicity, or you’ve had the experience of countless Synchronicities by now, this phenomenon is real and fascinating. The last couple of days, I’ve been contemplating this kind of appearances in my Life. I got curious, and I wanted to learn more about it. So, in this Article, I make a small introduction to this phenomenon as defined by C.G. Jung, then I describe Synchronicity through my eyes, and we end with ways to attune ourselves to Synchronicity.

Synchronicity, A Term Coined by C.G. Jung

Synchronicityas a term that describes this phenomenonwas first introduced by C.G. Jung. In Synchronicity: An acausal connecting principle, he explains:

I chose this term because the simultaneous occurrence of two meaningfully but not causally connected events seemed to me an essential criterion. I am therefore using the general concept of synchronicity in the special sense of a coincidence in time of two or more causally unrelated events which have the same or a similar meaning, in contrast to “synchronism,” which simply means the simultaneous occurrence of two events.

Synchronicity therefore means the simultaneous occurrence of a certain psychic state with one or more external events which appear as meaningful parallels to the momentary subjective stateand, in certain cases, vice versa.

The most known example of the Synchronicity that inspired Jung to study and write about this phenomenon is the story of the golden scarab:

A young woman I was treating had, at a critical moment, a dream in which she was given a golden scarab. While she was telling me this dream I sat with my back to the closed window. Suddenly I heard a noise behind me, like a gentle tapping. I turned round and saw a flying insect knocking against the window-pane from outside. I opened the window and caught the creature in the air as it flew in. It was the nearest analog to a golden scarab that one finds in our latitudes, a scarabaeid beetle, the common rose-chafer (Cetonia aurata), which contrary to its usual habits had evidently felt an urge to get into a dark room at this particular moment. I must admit that nothing like it ever happened to me before or since, and that the dream of the patient has remained unique in my experience.

Thus, Jung’s definition for this phenomenon is:

Synchronicity is the coming together of inner and outer events in a way that cannot be explained by cause and effect and that is meaningful to the observer.

Synchronicity Through My Lenses

If I were to explain Synchronicity, I’d describe it as the state of feeling and being in the right place at the right time, and yet space-time are infinite. Or, like the moment when One inserts the last piece of the puzzle and it all fits perfectly.

When I experience Synchronicity, it’s as if I’m on the right path, and I know with absolute certainty that I am on the right path. Just like walking the Camino and being guided by the Rays of Light Shell Symbol. Or being on a Mountain Path and noticing the Guiding Sign along The Way. And there’s Joy, Wonder, and Fascination, or what Jung calls the Numinous Feeling.

Can We Attune to Synchronicity?

Yes, we can attune to Synchronicity, once we’ve become conscious of the existence of this phenomenon. It starts with learning to pay attention to our inner world, to our thoughts, feelings, dreams, visions. And we can practice this with Meditation and Journaling, for example.

Attuning to Synchronicity in our Life is not about forcing outcomes or making them appear. It’s about being open and receptive to the symbolic messages acausally connecting the inner and the outer.

Also, taking care of our emotional health and cultivating elevated emotions increases the occurrence of synchronistic events in our lives. C.G. Jung also touches upon the correlation between states of affectivity and these phenomena in Synchronicity: An acausal connecting principle.

The more we open to receiving Synchronicity in our Life, the more we pay attention, the more we will notice it.
